FAQs

1. What is a baby well-being scan, and when is it recommended?

A baby well-being scan is an ultrasound performed to check the baby's overall health, growth, and development. It's typically recommended after 15 weeks of pregnancy and can be done at various stages to monitor the baby's progress, especially if there are concerns about growth or other factors.

2. What does a well-being scan check for?

A well-being scan assesses several factors, including the baby's growth, the amount of amniotic fluid, the position of the placenta, and the baby's movement and heart rate. It provides a detailed look at how the baby is developing and whether any issues need further attention.

3. Is a well-being scan part of routine NHS care?

In the UK, routine scans on the NHS are typically limited to the 12-week dating scan and the 20-week anomaly scan. A well-being scan is not always offered as part of routine care unless there are specific concerns. However, private clinics offer well-being scans for parents seeking additional reassurance later in pregnancy.
